I’ve been both a student, and now a teacher at Moana, so I have experiences from behind the scenes as well as in the lessons. Over time Moana Surf school has become a second home for me. When I first came to the school I was a nervous beginner. All my friends and siblings had already surfed for many lessons. I was the only one in the class who was a beginner. However, this was not a problem at all! I was separated from the group after the warm up and got a one-to-one super detailed explanation on how to surf, and in no time I was in the water. Immediately after that first lesson I fell in love with the school – and the place. All the teachers and other staff were always cheerful and happy to help. New students or visitors got a warm welcome. All the people who have gone to the school felt that special vibe that hangs in the air: relax, enjoy and be happy – A bad day surfing is better than a good day working!
Now, being a teacher I have realized that that vibe isn’t just a show, it’s actually how things work here! As well as hanging up wetsuits, handing out shirts and giving out boards, we are also there to help you to have an amazing time. Even if the conditions are very bad, we get together and figure out a safe plan: we discuss who sticks with whom and which person is in charge of what. When we arrive in the morning it’s a warm Bom Dia! Or Good Morning! – and at the end of the day it’s a cheerful See You Tomorrow! When we head off home again, to get ready for another thrilling day teaching and surfing and Guincho! 🙂
